Set up alerts

Rules that tell people, groups and Microsoft Teams channels when an outage opens or ends and when other events happen, with quiet hours and a delivery log.

GuideReviewed against the application source on October 12, 2026

Turn on a way out

Alerts tell chosen people, groups and Microsoft Teams channels when something happens. In Settings › System › Features, Email and Teams alerts is on, but Send alerts by email and Send alerts to Microsoft Teams are off until you turn one on, so nothing goes out until then. Email uses the mail server in Settings › System › Deployment, under Mail delivery. Teams needs the appliance to reach Microsoft’s webhook hosts.

Write a rule

  1. As an Administrator EX, open Settings › Reports and notices › Alerts and add a rule. Administrators can read the page.
  2. Choose the event: an outage opens or ends, Cenovel can’t read the network, support or a license is ending (30, 60 or 90 days ahead), a switch change fails, an automation found something, proposes a fix or couldn’t run, and in K-12 a change is applied during testing. An outage’s end is told only to whoever was told it opened.
  3. For outages, choose Critical only or Critical and warnings, and Where: the whole district or chosen schools.
  4. Choose Who is told: people, groups (departments) and Teams channels. Each person is told once, however many rules or groups name them.
  5. Optionally, Hold alerts during quiet hours (22:00 to 06:00 by default, on the district’s clock), and let Critical outages break quiet hours.

Check delivery

Use Send a test on a Teams channel or Email me a test. The Delivery log lists every alert and test, who it was for and whether it went: Sent, Waiting, Sending, Not delivered or Not sent. An outage covered by a maintenance window is “Not sent: a maintenance window covers this outage.” Each person can see the alerts they get on their Account page.

Alerts are separate from the Activity panel in the header, which only filters what you see in the console, and from the morning report, which has its own email.
